For Writers: Thistlecroft Press
The Casual Society of Literary Women is a subsidiary of Thistlecroft Press, LLC. Thistlecroft was established to support new and emerging writers as they find their voice. Currently, we offer comprehensive editorial services, the definitions of which are provided below, along with pricing. Whether or not you choose our service, please feel free to send an inquiry about anything editorial. We've seen too many new authors get taken for a ride by companies that say they are providing "editing" without additional definition, and what they've gotten is mid-level proofreading, for which they paid a lot of money. Know that there are multiple definitions for stages of the editing process; the items below are how we choose to define them.
Alpha/Beta Read $0.002/word
Alpha is a first read of raw, unedited work, and feedback can be used to guide your next steps. You have the opportunity to ask specific questions before or after the Alpha reading is completed. Beta is for completed work that needs one final set of eyes to determine any last elements that should be addressed. A fresh reader can really make a difference at this stage of your writing journey! For each type, you receive approximately one page of feedback and one call or email.
Copy Editing $0.03/word
The copy edit covers syntax, detailed grammar, sensitivity, layout, and consistency throughout your work. If you have a style or formatting guide from a publisher, we’ll ensure everything aligns.
Developmental $0.02/word
This is broad-stroke editing the big picture with detailed feedback about the overall structure of your book. Perhaps the plotline isn't quite working out, or changing your POV would enhance the story. Maybe the story is wonderful but has a couple hundred unnecessary pages. What is working? What isn't working? Development is similar in concept to an Alpha reading, but with more detail and author/editor communication. Up to five calls, emails, or Zoom meetings are included.
Final Proof $0.015/word
A light once-over for punctuation, homophone and other misspellings, minor layout glitches, and blatant grammatical errors that interfere with readability. This is the final polish before publication.
Line Editing $0.05/word
This is the most intense stage of editing. It includes a dissection of every line of your work, making changes for flow, engagement, comprehension, consistency, and factual accuracy. This work is accomplished in a shared live document and is highly collaborative. Authors have the opportunity to comment line-by-line as we clean up your words to let your voice and your intentions shine through. Unlimited in-doc communication is included with this, and Zoom, phone, or email as needed.
